This is perhaps where Gerard Butler (King Leonidas) plays his most power-packed performance yet, with the ravishing Lena Headey (Gorgo) as the Queen. Butler, the Spartan king, refuses to bow down to the advances of the much-feared army of the Persian Empire, which is charting it's away across the globe, crushing every force that stands in its path. The Persian envoy's arrival in Sparta is marked by an offering by Rodrigo Santoro (Xerxis) to King Leonidas to have total power over all of Greece. The only condition being, that he should bow down to the will of the all-mighty Xerxis. Unwilling to compromise and stoop to the will of the Persians, the strong-willed Spartan king assembles a small army of his empire's best fighters and marches off to battle. Though it seems pretty evident that their chances of defeating Xerxes and his intimidating battalion were close to negligible, Leonidas' men soldiered on. While the Spartan troops bravely marched towards battle, the loyal Queen Gorgo attempts to convince the council and the devious Theron (Dominic West) to send more troops to battle. As Xerxes' dreaded army closed in and wiped out the hopeful 300 Spartan soldiers, a few Greeks vowed to assist the Spartans on the battlefield. This show of nobility and fearlessness by King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors at the Battle of Thermopylae, inspired all of Greece to stand up against their Persian enemy and wage the battle that would ultimately form an alliance of the Greek states.
