Rohit (Aamir Khan) is an aspiring playback singer and not too wealthy. When the extremely rich Kiran falls in love with him, her parents obviously do not approve. But Rohit and Kiran marry anyway and have a son, Sunil. Soon, Kiran begins to get frustrated with their kind of life as she is unable to progress professionally what with managing the household and their child. She leaves both her husband and son and goes back to live with her parents. With great difficulty, Rohit manages both his personal and professional lives and gives a lot of quality time to his son too. A few years later, Kiran becomes a famous actress and now she wants the custody of her son. Watch the couple battle it out in a court of law.
