The film is based on a true story set in the 1970s. Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp) is an undercover agent who decides to infiltrate the mafia by taking on a new guise in the name of Donnie Brasco. Donnie gets the confidence of Lefty (Al Pacino), an old man working on the lower rungs of the mafia. Lefty recruits Donnie and they soon become friends. Donnie gets so involved in penetrating the mafia that he moves too far away from his life as Joe and gets closer to the gang members. How safe is he or Lefty for that matter?
