Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is a paleoclimatologist who visits Antarctica to find that a huge sheet of ice has broken of from the mainland. Jack is unaware of the disastrous set of events that this incident has triggered off. A major shift has happened in the climatic conditions that are bound to affect the world population. Jack's son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his friends are in New York for an event. It has been raining non-stop since 3 weeks and the temperature is freezing. Soon, people become aware that something is drastically wrong. Will anyone survive the onset of the new ice age?

During filming of the scene at the US Consulate in Mexico (actually filmed on the US/Mexico border in EL Paso, Texas) local residents were concerned about the military-appearing helicopters landing and flying low over residential neighborhoods, and the streets closed by the police for the filming, and some actually called the local authorities fearing that something was happening in the area.
