Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter), a nineteen-year-old college student believes that she has been possessed by demons. She stops taking medication and gives herself over to exorcism by her parish priest, Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson). Two days into the treatment, she dies and Father Moore is accused of homicide. The Archdiocese hires the ambitious lawyer Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) to defend the priest and to avert a scandal. Thus ensues a battle between religion and science in the court of law.
