A hundred years ago, on February 12, 1908, an auto race billed by both Le Matin and the New York Times as the "toughest race ever devised," began. The contestants were 17 men from four countries driving six of the era's most innovative automobiles; the route was from New York to Paris, and the event is known today as the Greatest Auto Race.
