Anacondas with Nigel Marven

Genre: Nature

    Show description

For over a century the hunt has been on to find a snake measuring more than 30 feet long. The anaconda is by far the world's most massive serpent and intrepid zoologist, Nigel Marven, is willing to bet that this is the snake that could reach those record lengths. But where in South America should he look for this giant? This all-action adventure takes Nigel on a whistle-stop tour of some of South Americas most wonderful wildlife locations. First stop is Venezuela, green anaconda heaven. The snakes are thick on the ground, well actually buried in the thick mud. Nigel finds them with his feet, but has to use his hands and all his strength to wrestle them into a position where they can be measured. There are no giants on this visit so while Nigel waits for the emergence of the monstrous females he makes a little detour to find snappy yellow anacondas in Brazil. Nigel watches these 10-foot serpents feed on fish underwater, one even tries to engulf a huge stork. Back in a flooded Venezuela Nigel finds a huge pregnant female, he even takes ultrasound video of her embryos, but she's still not close to the magic length and he lets her go to give birth in peace. After getting some expert advice, Nigel heads off to try and find the monster anaconda in the heart of the Amazon. The big problem here is it's such an enormous area, there's plenty of fantastic wildlife but searching for anacondas is like trying to find a needle in a giant haystack. In a spooky, moonlit creek, Nigel finally meets up with his quarry. Will it be the giant he craves?
